Speciality Food Magazine, sponsors of the Best New Cheese Retailer Award, invited delis, cheesemongers, farm shops and food halls to put their best foot forward and demonstrate this commitment to British Cheese.

"We sponsor this award because we are passionate about artisan British cheese and want to see the union jack flying over every new cheese counter that opens.”    Nicola Whitehead, Speciality Food Magazine

Aside from gaining publicity and national acclaim, the lucky victor, The Town Mill Cheesemonger won a free masterclass with Juliet Harbutt, an all expenses paid trip to this year's Awards Dinner, and a chance to judge at the 2010 Awards.

2009 Winner

The Town Mill Cheesemonger

Lyme Regis, Dorset

In response to the growing demand for local produce it is perhaps not surprising that, despite the economy, new retailers are still springing up all over the country.  Only those like The Town Mill Cheesemonger, run by someone genuinely passionate and committed to buying local producers, flourish.

Justin Tunstall gave up a successful career in publishing to return to his home town of Lyme Regis and set up a deli.  In November 2008 he found the perfect site in the old Town Mill and despite its size, barely big enough to swing a cat, he has stocked it floor to high ceiling with local products, especially cheese.  Within a month of opening in July 2009 he was selling more than triple the amount of cheese he had expected.

Juliet Harbutt chairman of the British Cheese Awards said

“Too many delis close within the first 2 years because the owners lacked the knowledge and experience of how to run a deli and ignore or are unaware of the training available from companies like ourselves and the incredible resources, informative articles and new and established products found in Speciality Food Magazine."

2008 Winner

Yellowwedge Cheese

Twickenham, London

This fantastic emporium of cheese and fine food first opened its doors in October 2007. With over 40 British cheeses on sale at any time this deli excited the judges with its range, fresh approach to retailing and frequent, clever promotional activity. Their knowledge of how cheese should be kept, served and packaged complements their often ‘funky’ approach to attracting customers attention.

2007 Winner

Arch House Deli, Bristol

Set up by Patrick & Susan Glennie-Smith it was a finalist in 2006 and has gone from strength to strength and in 2007 scooped the top spot. Recently purchased by David and Debbie who have demonstrate they are determined to maintain its reputation for quality, diversity and charm.
