What are the British Cheese Awards?

The last 25 years has seen a revolution in the British cheese industry with old recipes revived, new ones created and rare breeds re-established. To highlight this extraordinary diversity Juliet Harbutt created the British Cheese Awards in 1994 and had 296 entries from 97 cheesemakers. In 2009 we had 884 entries rom 189 cheesemakers.

Winners are announced on the Friday night, before the Great British Cheese Festival and at the beginning of British Cheese Week, at a gala dinner, so Festival goers will be the first to taste and buy the new champions.

Best British Cheese Board

Unbelievably many UK chefs still believe you need to use European cheeses to make a good cheeseboard despite their being nearly 600 different British cheeses to choose from including over 100 goats', 50 blues and 200 made with raw milk.

So help us find and reward chefs who seek out and support local cheesemakers.

Best New Cheese Retailer

This award promotes the best British retailers run by people dedicated to sourcing great local produce and who know how to bring out the best in British cheese so it reaches your plate ripened to perfection.

Nominate your best new local retailer and they could win Best New Cheese Retailer 2010.

British Cheese Week
